We've been having mini power outages at work, causing a few of our computers to hard reset. I was the lucky one that got to talk to the electrician about the problem.

He said that we were probably using too much data, and that our ethernet switches were the problem. I tried to confirm by asking "Just to be clear, you're saying that our computers are turning off and the lights are flickering because of DATA?"

To which he responded, "I'm sorry I can't answer that. I'm going to have to send one of my data guys out to look at it." He can't answer whether what he just told is bullshit or not!?

He also used the phrase "electrically speaking..."

Thankfully no, but there are plenty of private sector assholes too secure in their jobs as well.

Uhm.. what? I'd find another guy to work on it if I'm honest, if your switches causes something like that you're running some serious computing power (not that I can even begin to fathom how much data must go through a switch to cause something like that).. I don't know how this guy became an electrician, but I for one would not let him near anything electric.

Well, I considered that option, but as soon as I realized he'd be no help to me I pawned him off onto someone else.

I'm an engineer here, so thankfully it is not at all my job to fix this problem. I just had to talk to the guy because I was in the right place at the wrong time.

As for the actual problem, our computers do draw a lot of power, but our network traffic is minimal. I did not let on that I have a degree in EE as do half of the people in my group. He is undoubtedly full of shit, but it is now the job of my bosses and the building manager to deal with it. I don't anticipate the problem being solved any time soon.

I had a feeling you knew he was full of shit AND that it was not your problem :P

A side note though, just for kicks, a few years ago D-Link and others started pushing "green switches", and they sawed a TON of power.. almost 1w per 8 ports or something ;)

A couple things:

1. Why hasn't your IT dept installed uninterruptible power supplies at every workstation?

2. If you guys are running a top-of-the-line infrastructure, it could be that your workstation is just a thin client that only has an ethernet connection using power-over-ethernet. And if that's the case, he's still a fecking bullshitter because robust infrastructures should definitely have load balancing and failover capabilities that would prevent outages like what you're describing.

3. Butt toots.

I don't even know where to start. An electrician should never say the word data. Looks like you are going to have to purchase some UPSs.

The photo I posted is from a recent meeting of our executives, and that should tell you everything you need to know about how things get done around here. Valid questions, though.

Correct. We've bought a couple UPSs, and they show the voltage dropping down to 90V sometimes, which is way below the specs on our power supplies. They do solve the problem though and for very little monies.

the only problem with them though, is if you have a few, the batteries become a pesky maintenance item.

Yeah, I expect that to bite us in a few years. Picture me saying this with a straight face: I'm sure we'll find a better solution by then...
